What is masseter Botox, and why does aftercare matter?

Masseter Botox is a treatment used to relax the masseter muscle, the large muscle at the back of the jaw responsible for chewing and clenching. It's commonly used to ease jaw tension linked to teeth grinding, and to soften a square or heavy jawline. 

According to the NHS, teeth grinding is often linked to stress and anxiety, though the exact cause isn't always clear.

Because the toxin needs time to bind precisely to the targeted muscle fibres, what you do in the first 24 to 48 hours genuinely affects how your results settle. The NHS advises patients to ask about what aftercare to expect and who will look after them as part of any cosmetic procedure, which is exactly why getting this window right matters.

What should you expect in the first 24–48 hours?

It's normal to notice a few short-term effects while the treatment settles. According to the NHS, these are the most common:

• Mild redness, tenderness, or small bumps at the injection sites
• Slight bruising, particularly if you have thinner skin or take blood-thinning medication
• A feeling of stiffness or heaviness when chewing or clenching
• No visible slimming yet, as full results take around two weeks to develop

What to do (and avoid) in the first 24–48 hours

• Stay upright and avoid lying flat for at least 4 hours after treatment

• Steer clear of alcohol, saunas, hot baths, and other heat exposure for 24 hours
• Keep the treated area clean and avoid applying makeup or skincare products directly over the injection sites on the day of treatment

A gentle cold compress can help if you notice mild swelling, but avoid pressing firmly into the jaw itself.

When should you see a doctor?

Most people recover from masseter Botox without any issues, but it's worth knowing the signs that need medical attention. Contact your clinician if you notice:

• Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking that feels more than mild stiffness
• Facial asymmetry or drooping that spreads beyond the treated area
• Signs of infection, such as increasing redness, warmth, or pus at an injection site
• Swelling or bruising that gets worse rather than better after the first few days
