How much does private coil fitting cost at SABA?
Coil fitting is £400 for the consultation and fitting. The coil itself is not included and is charged separately.
SABA prices, October 2026. The coil is charged separately, and its price depends on the type. Reception can tell you the cost of each type before you book.
Which do I need?
- First coil: book coil assessment and fitting (£400, coil extra).
- Your coil is due to be changed: book removal and refit in one visit (£450, new coil extra).
- You'd like your coil taken out: book coil removal (£220).
- Not sure which coil suits you: send reception a message on WhatsApp (07703 980989) before you book.
If you have private medical insurance or a health plan through work, check whether your policy covers contraception appointments before you book.

How does that compare with other private clinics?
Private coil prices vary between clinics, and price comparison sites don't publish a typical UK range (TreatCompare, October 2026). The main difference is usually whether the coil itself is included in the quoted price.
Before you book anywhere, ask whether the price includes the consultation, the coil and aftercare. At SABA, the £400 includes your consultation and aftercare advice, and the coil is priced separately so you know exactly what you're paying for.

Copper coil or hormonal coil: what's the difference?
Both types are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, but they work differently and last for different lengths of time.
- Copper coil (IUD): contains no hormones and lasts 5 or 10 years, depending on the type. Periods can be heavier, longer or more painful, especially in the first few months.
- Hormonal coil (IUS): releases a small amount of the hormone progestogen and lasts 3 to 8 years, depending on the type. It can make periods lighter, shorter and less painful.
Your doctor will talk you through which type suits you at your consultation, based on your health, your periods and how long you'd like contraception for.
What happens when a coil is fitted?
At SABA, a coil appointment takes about 30 to 45 minutes, including your consultation and aftercare advice. The fitting itself usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.
- Book online, by phone or on WhatsApp. You don't need a referral. Call reception on 01279 874388 for the next available appointment.
- Your doctor asks about your health, periods and contraception history, and checks the coil is right for you.
- A speculum is used to open the vagina, as in a smear test, and the coil is placed in the womb through the cervix.
- You rest for as long as you need, then go home with aftercare advice. There's free parking outside the clinic at Chapel House, Thremhall Park.
Most people feel some pain during fitting. Taking a painkiller beforehand can help. You can ask the doctor to stop at any time, and you can bring someone with you.

What is recovery like after a coil fitting?
Period-like cramps for a few days after fitting are common, and painkillers usually help. You may also have some light bleeding or spotting between periods.
With a copper coil, periods can be heavier, longer or more painful, and this may improve after a few months. With a hormonal coil, periods often become lighter, shorter and less painful.
Your doctor will show you how to feel for the coil's threads, so you can check it's still in place.
Can I have a coil fitted free on the NHS?
Yes. Contraception is free and confidential on the NHS. You can have a coil fitted at a sexual health clinic, at some NHS GP surgeries and at some young people's services. Waiting times vary by area, so contact your local service to check how soon you can be seen.
A private appointment may suit you if:
- you'd like a fixed appointment time that fits around work or childcare
- you'd like your coil removed and replaced in one visit
- your NHS GP surgery doesn't fit coils
When should I get urgent help after a coil fitting?
Contact your NHS GP urgently or call NHS 111 if you have severe or worsening pain low in your tummy, a high temperature or abnormal, smelly discharge. The NHS gives the same advice for very heavy vaginal bleeding, or if you can't feel your coil's threads or they feel different.
