What happens to your lips after lip filler
Lip filler is injected through a series of tiny needle punctures, so for the first day or so your lips are essentially healing from several small wounds. Some swelling, tenderness and mild bruising are a normal part of this process and usually settle within a few days.
Because the skin is briefly broken at each injection point, your lips are more sensitive to irritation and infection than usual during this early window. This is exactly why vaping, showering and makeup are such common questions, they all involve something touching, wetting or covering the treated area while it heals. According to the NHS, having dermal fillers is generally safe when carried out by an experienced, suitably qualified practitioner, and understanding simple aftercare steps is part of getting a good result.
Can you vape or smoke after lip filler?
It is best to avoid vaping and smoking for as long as you comfortably can after lip filler, ideally for the first few days. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows your blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the skin, which is exactly what your lips need for smooth healing.
This matters more for lip filler than for many everyday cuts or grazes, because the lips have a particularly delicate blood supply. Vascular complications from filler are rare, but reduced circulation from nicotine on top of the treatment itself is not a combination worth risking.
If stopping altogether is not realistic, cutting back significantly for the first 48 hours is still worthwhile.

Can you shower after lip filler?
You can shower after lip filler, but keep the water lukewarm rather than hot for the first day, and try to avoid letting the spray hit your lips directly. Hot water increases blood flow to the surface of the skin, which can make swelling worse.
It is also worth avoiding swimming pools, hot tubs and submerging your face in the bath for a couple of days. Keeping a healing wound clean reduces the risk of infection at the injection points, and pool or open water is not the cleanest environment for that.
Pat your lips dry gently afterwards rather than rubbing them with a towel.
Can you wear makeup after lip filler?
It is best to avoid makeup directly on your lips, including lipstick, lip liner and gloss, for at least 24 hours, and longer if there is any visible swelling or bruising.
The injection points need time to close over, and applying products with a brush, sponge or your fingers increases the chance of introducing bacteria before the skin has properly sealed. Wound care guidance generally advises minimal handling of a healing site and washing your hands thoroughly first if you do need to touch it, and the same principle applies here.
Once any visible marks have settled, usually within a few days, your normal makeup routine is fine again.

When should you contact your clinician?
Most side effects after lip filler are mild and settle on their own within a few days, but a small number of signs need prompt attention.
- Skin that turns pale, mottled or dusky in colour, especially if it spreads beyond the treated area
- Pain that is significantly worse than expected, or that gets worse rather than better
- Blistering or visible skin breakdown near an injection site
- Any change in vision, or other symptoms affecting the eye
- Swelling that keeps getting worse after the first 48 to 72 hours rather than easing
